A playful double-meaning pilsner. Based on fables and lore, the wren is known as the king of birds for its cleverness. Its scientific name hints at a cave-dweller that forages and nests in the dark—much like lagers maturing in underground caves.
We loved that “Little King” (a nod to Ryan) ships about 99% of our orders. With a small team, Ryan quickly took on website orders, but after years, his title—”Shipping Captain”—just didn’t fit as a beer name (plus, we already have one boat-themed name, haha).
Self Care has crafted a fun mix of seasonal pilsners. I wouldn’t call this a permanent rotator yet; it’s an experiment with hopping techniques and the heritage of ancient German, English, or Washington-specific hops—resulting from some seriously clever breeding blends.
This pilsner showcases what Nugget hops can do, paired with a younger blend of Triumph as a companion hop—a cross of staple German lager hops and Nugget (plus a few English varieties Nugget was bred from). Modern and classic, this brew aims to innovate in the NA pilsner market. It’s more than just a nod to historic or trendy styles (Italian pilsners, cold IPAs, etc.). It’s something you can’t label—just like all that Ryan does for us, or how a little bird can be mighty.
Hops were feathered in during both the hot and cold sides of brewing. Look for Nugget’s notes of sweet fruits and citrus, mixed with Triumph’s characteristics and a punchy, woody aroma you’d expect from a modern lager hop. Nugget is one of our favorites—we wouldn’t say it’s traditionally used in lagers/pilsners, but it should be!
