Way back, in the early days, we had a philosophy to never say “no” to a 44# box of offered hops, regardless of variety, farmer, country or organization. It’s lead us to playing with A LOT of experimental varieties – some that stick around (Krush, Superdelic, Peacharine, Talus, Vista, HBC682, Strata…), some that don’t (Triumph, Medusa, HQG1, HBC472, HBC342, HBC638…), and some that the verdict is still out (HQG4, HQG3, ADHA 218, HBC 630, HBC 522, HBC1134…) – which we think is pretty fucking cool, and we hope you do too! You never know when something will surprise you! And even if it’s cool/fun/unique, is the demand there? Are the agronomics there? Are the yields there? On that note – here’s another new experimental hop in the pipeline from Yakima Chief Ranches and the Hop Breeding Company – HBC990 – paired with a lil Citra. The word on the street about 990 is it’s tropical, with a little berry, a little citrus. For us, it gives Mosaic-vibes – pineapple, passionfruit, golden raspberry, with a little dankness! Will it be around for a few harvests, or will this be the only time you ever see it? WE DON’T KNOW!
